Chapter

9

“I think I’ve got another code.” Raymon’s voice was subdued, considering they were more than five hours in and it was the first breakthrough they’d had in a long time. Or maybe it had something to do with the fact that Ander had just handed Raymon the code and explained it to him. At least, that’s the way it looked to Hendrix. Something about that bothered him, but he was too eager to try out this new code to worry just now.

“Let’s try it,” Kane said. He was on his feet and about to snatch the paper out of Raymon’s hand—the way he’d been doing this whole game—but Hendrix was closer and quicker.

“We need to make another copy and try it on both of the remaining doors with keypads. We still have the one at the bottom of the stairs, remember?” he said as he took the paper from Raymon. I want to be the one to open a door for once, Kane, Hendrix thought bitterly.

“Yeah, and I also remember that this door is right here and will take all of ten seconds to try before we go to the other one. So why waste time copying it down?” Kane said, getting right up in Hendrix’s face.

“Why waste time arguing about it at all?” Ander asked. While Hendrix and Kane were fighting with each other, Ander went over to the door and started entering the code. They both turned as he put in the last number and the light turned green.

It had been two hours since they’d gotten into the flight deck upstairs. Hendrix was so used to disappointment at this point that it took a second for his brain to realize what green meant. The others must have been feeling the same because no one moved for the space of several excited heartbeats. Then the moment passed and they all rushed forward at once, practically running Ander over in the process.

After the flight deck, Hendrix was expecting something amazing. But this room was . . . boring. It looked like an ordinary, living room—smaller than the futuristic room, more like a den. It had a love seat facing a TV and a small table with two chairs. Other than the entertainment center and a fireplace, every inch of the walls was covered in bookshelves. And unlike in the futuristic living room, these bookshelves were packed with real books. Raymon was already taking them down and looking through the pages. At least there are no new doors in here, Hendrix thought.

Kane, naturally, had gone straight to the TV. This one clicked on to a commercial, but when Kane tried to change the channel it only alternated between the commercial and the input screen. It didn’t take long for Kane to get frustrated and turn it off.

“Not even a clue this time,” he growled.

“Maybe that commercial means something,” Raymon suggested.

Hendrix thought he might be right. It didn’t seem like a real TV ad. But he was more interested in the input screen.
